210 | Michael was born in County Kerry, Ireland. He was a youth during the time when England was trying to discipline the Irish by banning and outlawing education and worship. As a result, what he learned had to be gotten secretly in what was called the "hedge school." that is, the teacher and a few boys hid in the hedges which were prevalent in Ireland to sneak in a few classes when they weren't being watched by the "peelers" (police). The meeting location of the classes was changed frequently to prevent the "peelers" from learning about the schooling which would mean arrest and prosecution of the participants. The final decision to leave Ireland, County Kerry (around 1845), came during the famine (1845-1847) when even the potato crop rotted in the fields due to a blight of some type. the trip to the United States was made in leaky old sail boats; a six week journed in good weather. They traveled streeage, that is, crowded like beasts in the hold of the boat which was overrun with rat and vermen. They had to bring along their own food. The water was rationed. Naturally many died and were buried at sea. It was only the hardy who withstood the hardship and survived the trip. It is believed these people landed in New Orleans and went up the Mississippi River branched onto the Illinois River and arrived at Peru Illinois which lies on the norther banks of the Illinois River. They settled on a farm about six miles northwest of Peru. The land (goverment owned) was either homesteaded or bought. It is believed the latter, though where or how he earned enough money to make the down payment is not known. The land was stony. They had to plow, lift the stones by hand to form fences and clear the stumps of what had been woodland. That farm now forms part of the town of Ladd, Illinois. It seems that mining companies purchased the Michal Flaherty farm and the farm next to it (the John Scanlan Farm) and started the town of Ladd on the road that divided the two farms. He had at least two sisters - Betrty Shea and Bridget Cahill. He died when his oldest son, Michael, was 13 years old (about 1859) leaving him breadwinner of the large family, with the admonition that his brothers Pat and John (the twins) were to have land; his brother Dan, an education, and "make a Priest of the baby" (brother James). Irish daughters were never given a share in the estate so they had to marry and make homes for their families. Michael was buried in St Vincent Cemetery, LaSalle, Illinois Michael Flaherty 1810-1859 This story is from the Flaherty Family History compiled by Donald James Flaherty around 1966 | FLAHERTY, Michael (I322356264174)

220 | Mrs. Hannah E. Paul, nee Ford, was born at Canisteo, New York, December 11, 1854, and peacefully fell asleep at the home of her eldest son, Milton J. Paul, at Berlin, Wisconsin, at the age of seventy-six years, five months, and two days. She was reared in the Baptist faith but came into the membership of the Methodist church after her marriage. Mrs. Paul was a self-made woman in every way, having been deprived of the care of both parents from early infancy, her father having passed away some weeks before her birth and her mother when she was but eleven years of age. For a time she made her home with an aged aunt and uncle in New York and later lived with a cousin in Cleveland, Ohio, where she took up dress making for several years until she came to Platteville as the bride of the late James H. Paul in the year 1879. Her life was lived unselfishly for those in the home and for whomsoever she could serve and the welfare of others was uppermost in her mind. Her home was blessed with eight children, two sons and six daughters; one daughter, Vemba passing away in infancy. From her first experience of motherhood her fondest hopes were for the education and Christian character of her children and in God’s wondrous plan those hopes were fulfilled as all of them have attended schools and colleges. Sixteen years ago a great sorrow and a great joy came to this mother’s life; the sorrow of husband and father called in death and the joy of Miss Nellie Peterson of Red Granite becoming the bride of her son Milton. She has ever been unto this family as one of them in every way. Ever proud and loving her five sons-in-law, they have been as sons to her. Her family are: Sadie, Mrs. Herbert Harris of Richland Center; Bessie, Mrs. Emery Miller of Muscoda; Clara, Mrs. Albert Sue of Platteville; Milton J. of Berlin; Emery M. of Markesan; and twin daughters, Harriet, Mrs. Will Cottingham of Fennimore; and Helen, Mrs. Edgar Sandeen of Hector, Minn. Dixon officiating. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery. Those from out of town to attend the funeral of Mrs. Paul were son James of Berlin; Mr. and Mrs. Milton J. Paul, and daughter Jeanette; Mr. and Mrs. Emery M. Paul of Makesan; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harris of Richland Center; Miss Ava Harris of Whitewater; Mr. and Mrs. Emery Miller and family of Muscoda; Mr. and Mrs. Leman Plank of Highland; Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Cottingham of Fennimore; Mrs. Edgar Sandeen of Hector, Minn; Mr. and Mrs. Milo Cottingham of Benton; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Curtis of Cuba City; Mr. and Mrs. Marion Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Lonn Miller, Mrs. Vern Miller of Muscoda; and Miss Beth Miller of Madison. | FORD, Hannah Elizabeth (I322356264484)

221 | Mrs. Hannah Paul, Revered and Honored, Passed Away Monday The passing of Mrs. Hannah Paul about 3:00 o'clock Monday morning, October 12, took from this community one of the sainted mothers in Israel, and one who was loved and honored, not only by her own family, but by all who knew her. Mrs. Paul or "Grandma Paul as she was lovingly called by her family and friends, has been failing in health gradually for some time, but continued to be in her place in Sunday school and church as regularly as her strength permitted. Six weeks ago she suffered a fall, and while Injured but slightly, seemed unable to rally from the effects of the shock in her weakened condition. She has gradually grown weaker from that time until the end. Everything that could possibly be done to make her last days comfortable and happy has been done, and she went peacefully to sleep and to rest. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at 2:00 o'clock yesterday afternoon, with her pastor, Rev. J. A. Farnham conducting the service. Appropriate hymns were sung by R. O. Lindskoog, Mr and Mrs Harry Hanson, and Miss Minnie Kessler, with Mrs. J. L. Bruce as accompanist. She was carried to her last resting place in the Odebolt cemetery by the side of her husband by six grandsons: Arloe, Veryl, Lyle, Archie and Milton Paul, and Walton Sargesson. Hannah Biddick was the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Biddick, and was born in St. Issey Parish, Cornwall, England July 15, 1844. At her death she had reached the age of eighty seven years, two months, and twenty-seven days. The family came to the United States In 1850, settling first in Platteville, Wis, later moving to the town of Mifflin. In the fall of 1865, she was united In marriage with William C. Paul at Platteville, and In 1871 they moved to Concord township, Harden county, Iowa. They were the first settlers in this township In the spring of 1893 the family moved to Wheeler township, this county, locating on the farm now occupied by her son, C. A . Paul. In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Paul retired from the farm life and moved to town, to the home where Mrs. Paul has since lived. The following year, November 6, 1902, Mrs. Paul lost her companion, and her home has been with her son, M. H. Paul and family. Mrs. Paul was the mother of five children, four of whom grew to maturity, Ella (Mrs. Payne Sargesson), Charles A. Allie J., Harry W., and Myron H. Only Charles and Myron, both of Odebolt, survive. There are twenty-six grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren, and two aged sisters. All of the grandchildren except six were at the funeral. In early womanhood Mrs. Paul united with the primitive Methodist church In Platteville. When they moved to Iowa, there being no church In the community, they helped to organize a Sunday school in a school house. When they came to this county they became members of the Methodist church, and Mrs. Paul has continued faithful to her church throughout her long life. She was a loved member of the Women's Bible class, and of the missionary societies, and could always be depended on for the support of all departments of the church work, giving her presence whenever possible. The following words written as the obituary for the mother of Mrs. Paul, were read by Rev. Mr. Farnham at the service. Every word could be said of our loved "Grandma Paul. "As a Christian she was consistent in her profession, being a devoted follower of her Lord and Master. She was always at her post if possible. The religion which she professed shed its hallowed beams on the actions of her life, not only on Sundays, but also on week days. Her life exemplified the Grace of God. Neither summer nor winter knew any alteration of her mind. She pressed toward the mark for the prize. She improved the short days of her life, and at last gained the "Well Done" of her father in heaven. As a wife and mother, she was worthy of imitation. She did her duty to her family, always seeking their happiness and comfort. As a neighbor she was beloved and esteemed by all who knew her and those who knew her best, knew best how to value her friendship. As a church we feel that one of our faithful members has fallen. A mother in Israel is gone and we deeply fee our loss. Relatives from out of town who were here for the funeral were Etolle Paul from Des Moines, Arloe Paul from Ames, Thelma Paul from Cedar Falls, Veryl Paul from Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs John Reilly, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sargesson, Minneapolis, Mrs. Ted Reilly of Merrill, Mrs C.
