He was educated the schools of his neighborhood, remaining in his native country until at the age of seventeen years, he came to America, landing in New Orleans on June 9,1853. He then went to St. Louis and from there to Rock Island, Ill. ,and in July of the same year he came to Peru where his brother, John Conlin was living. He worked on a farm for two months after which he was variously engaged for a time. He then worked for Isaac Abrams, a land agent and capitalist, and later her was employed a short time by N. In 1857, in patnership with his brother, Patrick Conlin, he engaged in the lumber business in this city and at the end of the yeaar he bought out his brother's interest,continuing the business alone until 1872.
