    • Community Shocked by Tragic Death;
      Life of Prominent Citizen Taken by Accident Sunday Morning
      A shocking accident, that caused the death of A. J. Paul, one of the prominent and esteemed residents of this community, happened Sunday morning, June 30.
      Mr. Paul, who though living In town himself, has been for years one of the large land owners, and stock feeders of this locality. He has had cattle in a pasture lot across the road from his residence which is in the east part of town. He left the house early in the morning, as was his custom, after doing some morning chores, and went to the lot to take care of the cattle. His niece, Betty Paul who lives near, saw him going from the barn to the well about twenty minutes to seven, and it was found that his watch stopped at fifteen to seven, showing at what time the accident happened. Mr. Paul did not return to the house when Mrs. Paul thought he should be coming, and she asked her son Verne to go to the pasture and see of anything had happened. Verne did so, and when he came near the well, saw at once that something was wrong. Calling E. H, Hanson, a neighbor, they investigated and& found that Mr, Paul had fallen into the well. This was about nine o'clock, and although a physician was called at once, and every effort made to resuscitate Mr. Paul, it was Impossible, life had gone. It was a terrible and tragic thing for the family and friends. Just how it happened will never be known. Either he slipped and fell, or he had a stroke or heart attack, and fell against the pump. There were bruises on his head and shoulder, and the supposition is that he was stunned by the fall, and could not protect himself from slipping into the well. The covering was loose on the well, and one of the boards followed him as he fell.The funeral service was held on the lawn at the home at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. C. A. Richards, pastor of the Methodist church, conducting the service. Mrs. Alvln Huldeen sang, with Miss Anna Carlson as accompanist. The body was carried to the last resting place by six nephews, Arloe and Duane Paul,& Veryl and Lloyd Paul, William Story and Walton Sargisson. Allle James Paul was the third child of William C. and Hannah Paul. He was born in Platteville, Wis., December 5, 1869, and was fifty-nine years, six months ,and twenty-five days old at his death. In March 1871 the family moved to Radcllffe, Hardin county, this state, where he grew to manhood, and in 1893 he came with the family to Wheeler township. Sac county.He was married to Edith M. Shelden, of Odebolt, February 18,1896, and the first years of their married life were passed on the farm in Wheeler. They moved to the present home about twenty years ago, though Mr, Paul continued his Interest on the farm. He was the owner of farms in Wheeler and a farm near Lake Park. Mr. Paul was a devoted husband and father, nothing being to good for his family. His wife has been an invalid for the past six years, and he has watched over and cared for her devotedly in her Illness. He took great pleasure and Joy in his little grandson, Jack Archie. He served his community efficiently as councilman for several years, and was a man of good judgment and stability. Early In his married life he united with the Methodist Episcopal church, services being held at that time in the Mitts school house. Mr. Paul leaves to mourn his death, his wife and seven children, Verne A., Archie L., Grace E.,Winnie E; Milton A.. Thelma E., and Amy J., all of Odebolt. He also leaves the little grandson, Jackie,- his aged mother, Mrs.Hannah Paul, two brothers, Charles A. and Myron H., of Odebolt. His father and sister preceded him in death. The business houses were closed from 2:00 to 4:00 o'clock, as a token of respect. The community mourns with the family to their deep bereavement
    • It is with marked satisfaction that the biographer adverts to the life of one who has attained success in any vocation requiring definiteness of purpose and determined action. Such a life, whether it be one of calm, consecutive endeavor or of sudden meteoric accomplishments, must abound in both lesson and incentive and prove a guide to young men whose fortunes and destinies are still matters for the future to determine. The subject of this sketch is distinctively one of the representative agriculturists of Sac county. For a number of years he directed his efforts toward the goal of success and by patient continuance in well doing succeeded at last in over- coming the many obstacles by which his pathway was beset, and is today considered one of the foremost farmers and stock dealers of the county.
      Allie J. Paul, a prominent farmer and live stock dealer of Odebolt, Sac county. Iowa, was born December 5, 1869. in the state of Wisconsin. His parents were William C. and Hannah (Biddick) Paul. The Paul ancestry is presented in the sketch of C. A. Paul, which is found elsewhere in this
      Paul was an infant when the family moved to Hardin county. Iowa, from Wisconsin. In 1892 the Paul family moved to Sac county, Iowa, and settled in Wheeler township.
      Allie J. Paul was educated in the schools of Hardin county, Iowa, and assisted with the labor on the farm when not in attendance at school. After the family moved to Sac count\'. Iowa, he remained on the home farm until 1895, then married and rented the tract known as the Mitts farm for three years, 1895 to 1898, at which time he returned to his father's farm and resided on that place for ten years, but removed to Odebolt, where he is now living, and in i()Oi he purchased two hundred acres of land in this county known as the Martin Miller farm and paid seventy-five dollars an acre for the farm. His land holdings now are two hundred acres in Wheeler town- ship, two hundred acres in Dickinson county, Iowa, and eighty acres in I.evey township, this county. In addition to his land holdings, he also owns an entire block in Odebolt. in which his home is located, opposite the city park. Here he has a fine, modern home which is equipped with all the up- to-date conveniences. He is now buying and shipping a large amount of li\e stock annually, and buys in this immediate neighborhood at least forty cars of stock each year.
      Mr. Paul was married February 18, 1896, to Edith Sheldon, who was born in Delaware county, Iowa, June 6, 1876. Her parents were Charles Field and Jeannette (Coquillette) Sheldon, natives of Ohio and Chicago, Illinois, respectively. Her parents on both sides were early settlers in Dela- ware county, Iowa, and were married in that county. They came to Sac county in March, 1877, locating in Cedar township. They are now living in Texhoma. Oklahoma, where they moved in 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Paul are the parents of six children: \"ern Allie, born Deceniljer 12. 1896; Archie Lawrence, born November 19, 1898; Grace Ella, born August 13. 1904; \\'innie Evelyn, born November 6, 1906; Milton Arthur. Ijorn March 29, 1910. and Thelma Eloise, born February 7, 1912.

Denison, a Baptist preacher and land speculator who came to the area in 1856. &ldquo;He was in many respects a farsighted and able man,&rdquo; wrote county historian Frederick W. Meyers in 1911, &ldquo;and decided that the interests of the community demanded some organ for the dissemination of news.&rdquo; One of the results of this effort was the Denison Review, a weekly paper founded in 1867 and published by George W. Stephens and M.H. Money. The Review was published intermittently until 1869 when it was purchased by James D. Ainsworth and began to appear on a regular basis.In 1874, the Review was sold to John Frederick Meyers, who remained active with the paper in some capacity until his death in 1898. In 1884, Meyers&rsquo; son, Charles K. Meyers, joined him as a partner in the business. Control of the paper passed temporarily to Charles in 1889 when his father was appointed to a position in the U.S. Treasury Department by President Benjamin Harrison. By 1893, Charles Meyers had left the Review to purchase the Cerro Gordo County Republican with his brother, Frederick W. Meyers, and John Frederick Meyers leased the Review to C.E. Wood. Wood retired in 1897 and the Review was leased to Frederick W. Meyers and E.F. Tucker until Meyers took full control of the paper in 1905. In 1910, ownership passed to James Perry Conner and his son, Raymond Conner, and Frederick W. Meyers remained as an editorial contributor.The Review was a staunchly Republican newspaper in a county with a substantial number of Democrats. Its contents included editorial and political news, local news, correspondence from neighboring towns, a Sunday school column, and miscellaneous material. The Review was only one of several newspapers in Denison and Crawford County during these years. In 1873, for example, the Denison Bulletin was founded as a Democratic alternative to the Review. There were also two German language papers in Denison --Die Denison Zeitung founded in 1880 and the Crawford County Demokrat in 1887. In 1913, these two papers were merged into Der Denison Herald which lasted until 1920 when it merged with the Bulletin.From 1890 to 1920, the Review was the most popular individual newspaper in the county. The paper more than doubled its circulation during this period from about 1,600 copies in 1890 to about 3,500 copies in 1920. It is important to note, however, that even after this substantial increase, the Review&rsquo;s circulation represented little more than half of the total newspaper circulation in Denison during those years. By 1943, the pressures of weekly publication led the Review to merge with the Denison Bulletin. It remains the Denison Review to the present</p>
