Death of W. C. Paul
William C. Paul died at an early hour last Thursday morning at his home in Odebolt. He was taken ill with catarrhal jaundice last spring and had an operation performed in June. For a time he seemed, to be recovering his health, but a severe attack of congestion of the liver about a month ago prostrated him and he gradually failed until death relieved his sufferings. The deceased was born in Portsmouth, England, in 1846. When he was a lad of seven years his parents came to America settling in Platteville, Wisconsin, where in 1865 the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Hannah Biddick, who survives him, with four of the five children born to them. In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Paul came to Hardin County, Iowa, where they remained until 1893, when they located in Wheeler township, this county. In 1901 they built a house in Odebolt and moved to town, leaving their sons to manage the farm. Funeral services were conducted in the M. E. church last Saturday by Rev. J. L. Whitney. Mr. Paul was a good citizen and enjoyed the respect and esteem of his neighbors. - As Time Goes By Odebolt, Iowa 1877-1977 printed by The Odebolt Chronicle May, 1977, William C. Paul., born 1846, in England, came to America in 1857. In 1865 William married Hannah Biddick, born 1844 in England and came to America in 1850 with her parents. They settled near Plattsville, Wisconsin. Their trip across the Atlantic took six weeks because of storms. The Biddick family left England because farmers had to pay such high taxes besides giving to the Church of England one-tenth of harvest and one-tenth increases in stock. William and Hannah first lived in Grant County, Wisconsin and came to Hardin County, Iowa in 1870, coming to Sac County in 1892 and bought land in Wheeler Township. Mr. and Mrs. William Paul were parents of Charlie, married Sarah Crawford; Ella (Mrs. Payne Sargisson); Allie married Edith Sheldon; and Myron married Charlotte Shatto. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Paul were parents of Iola (Mrs. Walph Wade); Veryl: Myrtle (Mrs. Alden Fineran), Lloyd and Lyle (twins), Lyle married Gertrude Goreham. Mr. and Mrs. Allie Paul were parents of Vern, married Helen Kessler; Arch married Lillian Little; Grace; Winnie (Mrs. James Scanlan); Milton married Lola Sonksen; Thelma (Mrs. Marvin Sonksen) and Amy (Mrs. Marvin Mauer).Mr. and Mrs. Myron Paul were parents of Etoile (Mrs. Lawrence Ulvestad); Gladys (Mrs. Durward Wright); Arlo; Duane; and Elizabeth (Mrs. Kenneth Cranston-Mrs. Stanley Kemper).
- William C. Paul, the second man who settled in Concord, and now the oldest settler in the township, is a native of England, born February 9, 1846. In 1853 the family came to the United States, and settled in Grant county, Wis. Here, William C. Paul helped till the soil, received a common school education, and subsequently resided in Iowa county, where, in 1865, he married Miss Hannah Biddick, daughter of Matthew and Nellie Biddick. In 1870 Mr. Paul came to Iowa in search of a location, and soon purchased his present property, then returned to Wisconsin, and, in the spring of 1871, removed to his new home. The family consisted of Mr. Paul, wife and three children. They had no neighbors north, east or south of them for several miles; on the west, however, in Hamilton county, there were a few settlers. Mr. Paul now owns 200 acres of land; is honest, industrious and enterprising. They have had four children, three of whom are now living -- Ella H., Charley A. and Allie J. From History of Hardin County, Iowa - 1883
