• Notes
    •
John Wayne moved from there to Merryland,

Otsego County, N.Y. This place was about ten miles from Cooperstown. He

married Isabell Burnside, and to them were born three sons and five

daughters. Anthony Wayne their second son served in the seventh regiment

of the New York Home Guard-d-beginning at age eighteen and serving until

he was forty-five. He began as private, then went on to captain, major

and colonel. He was married in 1821 to Thankful Platt. To them were born

four children, Harley, Celestia, Daniel, and John. (Celestia became the
grandmother of our Grandpa Shelden.) Two of these sons were in Civil

War. Celestia was born January 26, 1825. At age seventeen she married

Wilson Burnside and they lived just one mile from her old home. Here

Wilson taught the home school. When she was twenty years old she and her

husband joined the Methodist Church. In the mean time her parents had

moved to Franklinville, (Elgin) Illinois. In May, 1847 they decided to

go there too. They went by boat through the lakes to Chicago. Wilson and

their two children, Viola and Harley, became sick from the journey. Vio

died at age four and Harley when very young. Wilson died May 31, 1848.

They were all buried in Franklinville, Illinois. She then went to live

with her parents and on Sept. 7, 1848, her second son was born. He was

named Wilson for his father. On June 1, 1852, Celestia married James

Coquillette (James was a widower with a little girl named Mary, and had

been one of Celestia's school mates at Cooperstown.) They moved to

Chicago, but only lived there a few months, and then came back to live

near her folks. To them were born six children,Jenet (Jeanette), Julia,

Emily, Celestia, John, and Percy. They lived there on their farm for

several years. Celestia's mother died in 1858 and her father in 1859.

Both are buried at Franklinville (Elgin). When the Civil War came they

found it hard to supply their needs, but by lots of hard work and good

management they kept the children from suffering. In 1865, they sold

their farm and moved to Iowa, They located three miles northwest of

Prairieburg, Iowa (Linn Co.) There their children grew up, married, and

they were alone, so they rented their farm and did some traveling. Later

because of poor health, James had to sell the farm. They went to live

with the youngest son, Percy and his wife, Carrie, in Havelock, Iowa.

(Pocahontas Co.) There James died Nov. 14, 1891. He is buried in

Havelock, After that Celestia went to live with her daughter, Jeanette,

and family, the,Charles Sheldens. While living there she married again,a

widower by the name of Roberts. He only lived a short time. Celestia

Wayne Burnside Coquillette Roberts died Feb. 18, 1920, at age 96, and h
daughter, Emily Coquillette Flint, who wrote this record died Aug. 31,
1947 age 90 years.
