For a week or more the imprisoned spirit had been struggling to break the bonds of flesh and fly away to its eternal home. For months past Mrs. Henderson had been in very poor health and all that tender care and medical skill could do proved of no avail in checking the ravages of the disease.

Mary Shelden was born December 6, 1844, lacking but two weeks of having completed her seventy eighth year at the time of her death. In the fall of 1855 she removed with her parents to Iowa, finishing her education in a select school in Manchester. At the early age to 16 she began teaching, in which work she continued until her marriage with James Henderson, August 30, 1863, from which time she was his able helpmate in all the different enterprises he was engaged in for almost fifty years. To this union three children were born, William, Bert J. and Mamie (now Mrs. Ed G. Boeke). The elder son was called on before on August 27, 1897. About ten years ago she moved with her husband and children to this state and has since made this her home, gaining with each revolving cycle of time more and dearer friends, until at the present time but few are outside of that list.

The deceased was raised in a Christian home, her father being an elder in the Deciples church with which she united at an early age, afterward transferring her membership to the Methodist because of more convenient church privileges in that denomination. A little over a year ago she united with the Presbyterian church of this place, coming in by letter from the old home church in Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday afternoon. The house was crowded from one end to the other with friends and neighbors of the deceased who listened with rapt attention to the comforting words of Mr. Howe as he extolled the many virtues of the wife and mother who had so lately been engaged in those domestic duties with which her memory will always be associated. More comforting still was the absolute assurance that her spirit still lives.

The remains were taken Tuesday morning to the old home in Iowa where they will be laid to rest beside the dear ones who have gone before. Mr. James Henderson and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boeke accompanied the body.

The sincerest sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family.

Times Enterprise, Wessington, Beadle, South Dakota
Friday, November 29, 1912, p1 c1
