•
REFN: 490

In Dutch, Toenink , Toenman, or Tunink all mean the same thing. This

simply means that the name Toenink also appears in the registeres as

Toenm an or as Tunink, which are all variations of one and the same name.

In the D utch language the ending -ink or ing means the same thing as -

man. The word Toen or Tun is probably derived from the modern word

tuin, which means gard en. So the name Toenink or Tunink means literally

man from the garden. Our Family got this name because thye lived on a

farm called Toenink, based in th e community of Agelo.

The use of last names of man and women in the 18th centu ry can be very

confusing. This is due to the fact that only with the introdu ction of

civil registration in 1811, people were obligated to use familynames as

we know them today. In the 18th century people on the countryside were

named after the farm on which they lived. If a family lived on a

diferent f arms, we often see that they are registered under different

names. That was the case with Janna Nijhuis, who is also know as Janna

Oude Bruingerink. She was born on a farm called Nijhuis, but moved later

to a farm called Oude Bru ingerink.
